About Us

Short Moves, a local moving company built by repeat and referral customers.

We did our first moving job February 23rd, 1990, an $84 flat rate job and we never looked back. We believe in the philosophy that if you treat people the way you want to be treated, it will come back to you.  In 1991 we grew to 2 trucks, in 1992 we had 3 trucks,  and at the end of 1995 we were running 6 trucks. By 2008-2009 the great recession started to affect our business, we were running 10 trucks full time and had 20 guys on our crew. Around that time a lot of our competitors could not keep up with the failing housing market and a lot of moving companies in our local areas went out of business or had to change their name. The biggest thing that kept us afloat was our consistent stream of repeat and referral customers. We also noticed that people began to downsize, so we started our own store called Consignment House. Now we help a lot of our customers by offering consignment service!

We have always been aware that if you try to grow too fast, you lose your ability to control quality. Our company policy is simple. Family comes first. Honesty is the best policy. Treat customers and employees with the dignity and respect they deserve. Always give the customer the benefit of the doubt.
In June of 2001 we purchased our 3,000 sq. ft office building and large truck lot. After our Consignment store became a success we outgrew that building right away and in 2017 we moved our consignment shop to a new 14,000 square foot building, which is also home to the Short Moves headquarters.  We have proudly been serving the west central Florida area for nearly 30 years, you never have to worry about where our truck is coming from or going to after your move, we do such a large volume of moves that we have crews in your area all the time.  We provide excellent service and attention to detail on every move. We guarantee our customers a great crew with a good attitude and a fast work pace. Once your move is complete we want to have done such a great job that you would tell your friends and neighbors to use us.  Our quality of service remains consistent as you can see in our Customer Comment cards!. We have also maintained an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau the entire time we have been in business.

Frequently Asked Questions

See some common questions and answers below

  • What's a Short Move?

    We are!

We actually just stay within the state of Florida. We can service most moves statewide, but to offer the best competetive price we are ideal for local moves around Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Pasco, Hernando, Sarasota and Manatee counties.

  • Do you charge from where you come from?

No, we never charge time for driving to or from the job location.  Our trucks and crew are spread out over an 8 county area every day. As a moving company we move all over, so we offer competetive pricing for all areas we serve. Most of our customers will move in the same area, down the street, or maybe county to county. We can complete local moves in all our surrounding counties by our network of trucks and crew moving our customers.

We have 1 office with our consignment store in St. Pete. Our crews are up and down the gulf coast of Florida and have been since we started in 1990. Back then we advertised in the phone book in each area we would serve. We still have individual phone numbers for each county. We never charge from where we come from or go to, before or after the move.

  • Do you require a deposit?

We never require a deposit. We don't want a penny from our customer until they are satisfied at the end of the move.

We have never missed a commitment, meaning we show up for every scheduled move without needing a deposit.

Be careful giving out a deposit too soon. There are a lot of companies that keep deposits or charge fees to cancel. To us that is a rip off, and we will tell you that as a mover over 30+ years in the industry, you should schedule your move about 1 - 2 weeks out. Our schedule can get full 2 weeks ahead for busy times like the end of the month in summer.

  • What's the best way to get an estimate?

The best way is to call us, we will ask you a series of questions about your move to work up an estimate. We determine if we would need to come look at anything or if it could be estimated remotely. You can also submit our estimate form here on our site or contact us by e-mail. Our estimators all have moving experience working and training with our crew to know what to ask and how to estimate our work well.

  • Do you wrap everything?

We use our quilted moving blankets to pad items as we load the truck. Some things will be better with stretch wrap like leather or light colored upholstery, so we supply our crew with stretch wrap to use, but we do not waste time by over-using it. We do not charge for the use either.

We have large furniture rubber bands to keep doors closed, and we are careful to not damage furniture on the way to the truck. Our trucks are stoked with hundreds of quilted pads. This is the most efficient and cost effective way to move locally.

  • Are some days cheaper than others?

Some moving companies will charge a higher rate for weekends or busy days. Not us! We provide the same level of service wether its a Monday or Saturday. Our rates are the same every day of the week, Monday through Saturday. With that said our Fridays, Saturdays, and end/beginning of the month can get booked up full about 1 - 2 weeks ahead.

  • Are your movers subcontractors?

No! Our movers are backround checked, full time employees that are covered under our workers comp insurance if an injury occurs. Our crew of movers are all very skilled at moving in the most efficient professional and careful manner. We do not overbook our schedule so we do not fill our trucks with temporary employees or subcontractors.

  • Whats the biggest difference in moving companies?

The biggest difference between us and our competition is our skilled moving crew, the people we have working for us that come knocking on your door on move day.  Some companies spend tons in advertising thus creating their need to run as many trucks as possible with whoever is willing to do the job. We like to do the opposite. We only schedule as much work as we can handle for our crew of full time movers. We operate with 7 trucks and a crew of 10-14 movers.

Companies that send less skilled labor will show a red flag by limiting their damage payout to 60 cents per pound.
